Student Led Transition

The school has a student-led transition program to assist military students coming into the school. The program includes a student serving as transition team coordinator; a military peer-support system linking new military students with others at the school within the first week of arrival; and a process for familiarizing new students with the school campus, including student leaders and upcoming events. On a student’s first day at Hammett L. Bowen, Jr. Elementary School, he/she will receive a school tour with a safety patrol member/team who introduces him/her to important staff members and other students with similar experiences.

MCPS Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Services

Marion County has approximately 7,000 exceptional students enrolled in its public schools. An exceptional student is one who has special learning needs. The special assistance received in school is called Exceptional Student Education, or ESE. Our goal is to provide every exceptional student with a free appropriate public education (FAPE), help them progress in school, access the general curriculum, and prepare them for life after school.

The Marion County Public School System offers a continuum of services and programs to meet the individual needs of students requiring special education, ages 3 through 21. The degree to which services are provided is based individually on each child's Individual Education Plan (IEP) as set forth by a staffing committee. The continuum of services may be provided in a variety of settings, which include regular classrooms, resource rooms, hospital/homebound, separate day school, special class, and non-public school (contractual).

If you suspect your student has a disability or for more information about any of our programs, please call the school at (352) 291-7900 and speak with Ms. Terrell, our School Counselor or Mrs. Evans, our ESE Specialist.

Mental Health Challenges

There are many challenges military students face due to their unique situation, such as having a parent deployed for extended periods of time, changing schools, and leaving friends.

If you have questions or concerns about your child's mental health, please contact our school’s Mental Health Designee, which is our school counselor, Ms. Terrell. Speaking to the Mental Health Designee is the best way to make a connection with your child’s school and work together to find the best way to support your child’s individual needs.
